Tuesday, November 3, 2026: stocks split on Election Day. Chip makers rebounded and carried the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 higher, ending the S&P’s three-day slide, while the Dow fell. A strong job openings report pushed yields up. The bigger moves came after the bell, when AMD, Arista and Super Micro reported, and the first poll closings are still ahead tonight.

What it means for options traders

Realized vs implied. A VIX of 20.83 works out to about 1.30% a day on the usual divide-by-16 shortcut. The S&P 500 moved 0.36% close to close, and the 0.54% gain TheStreet showed at 12:51 p.m. was still well inside that figure. Index vol kept a premium over what the session delivered, which is common with a known event still ahead.

Index calm, single-stock size. Arista up 12.56% and Skyworks down 16.58% sit in the same broad tech trade, and neither shows up in an index that moved a third of a percent. That is dispersion: the gap between index vol and the vol of its members. Today’s index options expired before any of these reports, so the after-hours repricing belongs to the expirations still open. We could not confirm a closing skew reading.

Term structure. Saxo had about 1.85% priced through Friday this morning. Election results, Wednesday’s Treasury refunding and Friday’s jobs report all sit inside that window. Comparing expirations on either side of each event shows where the premium sits, which is the same comparison a calendar spread is built on. For the companies that reported tonight, front-month event premium usually gets repriced once results are out, and setting the actual move against what was priced is the useful exercise.
